What's your superpower?
June 29, 2026
Hello Friend!
I'll bet you didn't know I have a superpower. Yep, I can do a thing without really having to try hard, it's just a natural skill I possess. Wanna know what it is?? Drum roll...
I can cut a straight line around any photo border without having to use a paper cutter. AND as an additional bit, I know when a hanging frame is even and properly spaced around other items without having to check with a measuring tape or level. Pretty impressive, yeah? I hear you laughing.
Let me explain. Years ago I worked in a little office with a gal who was taking classes to certify as a teacher, but in the interim she was working as an office manager. She was smart, talented and I really enjoyed working with her. But interestingly she was absolutely unable to cut a straight edge with a pair of scissors. It scared her to death to even try and she always handed off a cutting job to someone else. I remember thinking it might be a problem for a future elementary school teacher but I was always happy to help. I also knew that cutting an accurate straight edge was easy for me if I focused. And to this co-worker, I really did have a superpower.

There are, of course, drawbacks. If I get in a hurry I'm just as sloppy as the next scissor wielder, and the crooked lines drive me nuts. And I find myself straightening frames a LOT, since they inevitably lean or slide over time. My eye will notice an out of sync frame from a room away and I have to tweak. Poor Jon, when it comes to hanging a grouping of frames he knows it's going to take a loooong time because I'm so picky about spacing. But still, I embrace my superpower.
I believe we all have something we do really well, without having to practice for hours. My oldest daughter is a master organizer, she has the natural ability to manage all the details and keep things rolling just so. This is not my skill! And my youngest daughter has the most amazing print, straight and even and with just the right flourishes. We're always asking her to print a thing if it needs to be pretty and polished.

The truth is, a superpower doesn't have to be flashy to be real. My grandsons know this. They're constantly asking me to "Look what I can do!", and it turns out to be something as simple as standing on one foot. But they're grinning and feeling proud and I'm clapping enthusiastically.
We might want to take a lesson from this and really celebrate all the little things we can do. We all have talents, no matter how small! Embrace your skills, feel good about them no matter what they are.
So I ask, what's YOUR superpower? Whatever it is, I'm cheering for you!
